OVERVIEW
Founded by New Zealander Bruce McLaren in 1963, McLaren produced their first F1 car in 1966. When McLaren was killed testing at Goodwood in 1970, the team was in disarray, and management was left with Phil Kerr and Teddy Mayer.
In 1980, the team merged with Ron Dennis' 'Project 4' organisation to form 'McLaren International.'
The late 1980's were McLaren's era, with championships in 1984, 1985, 1988 (where the team won 15/16 races) and in 1989.
The 1990's started similarly with championships in 1990 and 1991. However Honda pulled out of F1 at the end of 1992, and Senna left the team at the end of 1993.
The team failed to produce a race win from the end of 1993 until the first race of 1997 where David Coulthard won in Australia.
1995 saw the beginning of Mercedes partnership, and team won championship in 1998, and Hakkinen won drivers title in 1998 and 1999.
Hakkinen retired at end of 2001, and Kimi Raikkonen signed for 2002, taking championship down to wire in 2003, but losing. 2004 was a step backwards, but 2005 saw the team produce the car of the year, only losing championships to unreliability.
