rollover ff1 template   THIERRY BOUTSEN-INTERLAGOS
rollover ff1 template   A bizarre incident, which, unlike many of the incidents seen here, was the fault of the driver rather than the team mechanics.

At his tyre stop, Thierry Boutsen seemed to misjudge the his pit box entry point, and hit one of the tyres that had been laid out for him, damaging the nose of his Williams.

Boutsen was pushed back by the Williams mechanics so that he could swing the car back into the pit area, remembering that reversing would see him disqualified by the race stewards like Mansell at Estoril 1989.

The stop cost Boutsen a bundle of time, as he was pushed back to allow his to enter the pit box, and had his tyres and nose cone changed, and although the Belgian eventually recovered to finish in a commendable 5th place, he was one lap down.

The events of Interlagos 1990 are shown below:

Boutsen has hit the tyre, and the damage to the front wing is apparent already.

The tyre is sent rolling down the pits.
Boutsen is pushed back by the mechanics.
Boutsen recovers and makes a normal approach to his pis pit box at the second time of asking.
    The pit stop goes ahead.
