rollover ff1 template   Pit stops are a dangerous time, but injuries are few and far between. Unfortunately in this incident, injury was present.

On lap 24 of the 2000 Spanish Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher pitted for the first time. After seven seconds, he was waved away, but this was too soon, for the refuelling hose had only just left the nozzle, and Nigel Stepney-team coordinator, had not pulled back from the car. The car pulled away, and Stepney's foot was run over by the rear wheel, and he fell to the ground. Stepney had to go to the circuit medical centre, and was found to have a broken ankle.

Ferrari continued the race with Andrea Vacari as refueller, and pit stop times suffered as a result.

"We had a problem at the first stop and that gave us problems for the second one also," said Schumacher.  "At the first one, the lollipop man lifted it and then put it down again. But it is impossible to stop that quickly. I felt I had driven over something and I looked in my mirror and saw a mechanic on the ground. I asked the team what happened but they did not reply."

The events of Barcelona 2000 are shown below:

6.7 seconds, the lollypop has been lifted, meaning Schumacher is free to exit-but the fuel hose is still connected to the car.
7.0 seconds, Schumacher begins to exit, while Stepney and the other mechanic desperately try to edge away.
7.1 seconds, and Schumacher is pulling away, while the scramble to edge away from the car looks more desperate.
7.3 seconds, Schumacher is exiting the box, while Stepney begins to fall over.
Stepney is almost on the ground, his foot having been run over.
The Ferrari crew carry Stepney back into the garage to recieve medical attention.
